After a crash with an impaired driver
The steps that protect your health and your claim.

At the scene
- Call 911. Tell the dispatcher you think the other driver is impaired.
- Don’t confront the driver.
- Photograph the scene, vehicles and plates if it’s safe.
- Get witness names. People often notice signs of impairment.
Afterward
- Get the police report number and the case number for the criminal charge.
- Get medical care and follow through.
- Don’t give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer.
- Write down everything you remember: what you saw, smelled, heard.
Call early. Bar video, receipts and other evidence disappear quickly.
